What is an EPAC subcommittee?
The EPAC is an advisory group, appointed by the President and Provost, and comprised of UConn administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni representatives.
Its purpose is to advise senior administrators about strategies for improving UConn’s environmental performance. The EPAC has formed three subcommittees.
Each subcommittee includes several appointed EPAC members but will consist primarily of ad hoc members, typically UConn staff, faculty and students, who have been selected
to participate based on their interest in the topics covered by the subcommittee. The three subcommittees are:
- Land Use & Sustainable Development – “green” building and low-impact design principles for our construction program, open space conservation, natural
resource protection and habitat restoration
- Compliance & Best Practices – “green” procurement, waste management, conserving resources and minimizing air and water quality impacts that
result from our everyday operations
- Environmental Outreach - increased awareness and personal responsibility (e.g., recycling), enhanced environmental literacy, improved reputation and community relations on
environmental issues
What is the purpose of the subcommittees?
The purpose of each EPAC subcommittee is to identify specific projects or initiatives/Best Management Practices (BMPs) that reflect the principles of our Environmental Policy
and improve UConn’s environmental performance and reputation. Each academic year, subcommittees will be formed to select a few initiatives, develop measurable goals and
implement action plans for achieving those initiatives, then check UConn’s progress in achieving those goals.
How much time will be required and how will the subcommittees function?
The subcommittees operate by consensus and will probably require one meeting for each of the steps in the process illustrated below. Subcommittees should complete their work
before the beginning of the next academic year. In addition, each subcommittee member can expect to allocate a few hours a month to subcommittee tasks. The Director of Environmental
Policy will provide subcommittees with additional administrative and technical support, as needed.
