University of Connecticut
Recycling Program
UConn Recycles!
In 2005, UConn contracted with Haley & Aldrich, Inc., an engineering company specializing in environmental consulting, to review UConn's existing recycling program and propose new systems where needed.
We are extremely excited about UConn’s recycling program. By recycling more, UConn reduces waste, conserves energy and natural resources, saves money on disposal costs and makes our campus more environmentally sustainable!

We’re revitalizing our program with new and better recycling containers designed to prevent mixing of trash and recyclables, and more outreach efforts. Still, we need everyone’s help to make this program successful. Items collected are:
Mixed Office Paper |
Cardboard
(please flatten & place near blue recycling bins) |
Newspapers |
Bottles & Cans |
Old red and yellow recycling bins in academic, administrative, and athletic buildings will be removed. Maintenance personnel will distribute new color-coded recycling containers for desksides and common areas. The color change conforms to national industry standards.
Recycling and regular trash pickup
To manage all waste effectively, recycling and regular trash pickups will be as follows:
-
Common Areas (mailrooms, copy rooms, hallways, kitchens, etc.)
-
Trash and recycling bins in common areas will be collected daily.
-
Blue recycling bins with slotted lids will handle mixed paper.
-
Green lid recycling bins will handle bottles & cans.
For details about what can be recycled, check the stickers on the bins.

Offices/Deskside Bins
Wednesday is recycling day! Custodians will collect:
- Recyclable mixed paper from deskside recycling containers and deposit it in the larger recycling bins outside the buildings.
- Recyclable bottles & cans from central recycling containers located outside restrooms, in hallways and other common areas.
On Wednesdays, custodians will NOT pick up regular trash from deskside containers. Trash will still be collected from restrooms and public areas throughout the week. You should dispose of perishables (like banana peels that could attract flies or begin to smell) in trash containers located in common areas, such as kitchens.

Let’s all work together to make UConn a leader in recycling.
Please call UConn’s Office of Environmental Policy at 860-486-5773 if you have questions or comments, or need more recycling containers.
Thank you for your support!
