Porous and Permeable Pavers

While only a small fraction of the overall paved surfaces today, porous pavers are helping to improve stormwater management and groundwater infiltration. These practical paver options are designed to allow air and water to pass through paved surfaces, while still providing durability and longevity needed in today's world. If used properly, porous and permeable pavements can facilitate biodegradation of the oils from cars and trucks, help rainwater infiltrate soil, decrease urban heating, replenish groundwater, allow tree roots to breathe, and reduce total runoff, including the magnitude and frequency of flash flooding.

Here at the University of Connecticut, we are joining the movement to utilize applications of these important paving solutions. Already, the University has approved of its first application of permeable and porous pavers at the Storrs main campus. At the Lakeside Apartments these pavers have been installed, and in the future, we hope to continue utilizing porous pavers in other renovation projects.

Historically, Lakeside Apartments have served the University as a venue for housing important visitors and guests to the campus.

Today, the University continues its tradition for keeping this site as an important link in University relations, by renovating the Apartments into office space for the University Relations center.
