Department of Dining Services
Recycling & Waste Reduction Efforts
The Department of Dining Services has been an integral part of UConn's effort to promote a more sustainable campus.
Recent Initiatives Include:
Trayless Dining
Starting in Fall 2008, all dining units on campus except for South Dining have gone trayless! Since then, there have been definite decreases in water and energy use in the dining units in addition to noticeable decreases in food consumption and ordering. Visit Dining Services' website about this initiative for more information.
No More Paper Cups
Paper cups are no longer offered in the dining units! You are welcome to bring a reusable cup or mug if you wish to carry out a beverage. An average of 10,000 paper cups per week were thrown out before this measure was instituted.
Reusable Beverage Container Give-away
Four thousand new, reusable, recyclable beverage containers will be distributed to lucky dining unit customers during a Spring semester give-away! Additional hot/cold beverage bottles will be available for purchase at all retail locations. A discount is available on beverages for customers using reusable containers!
Also be sure to check out Local Routes, a program designed to encourage the use of local products in campus food service operations.
