Spadefoot Toad and Blue-spotted Salamander Research Assistants (2 positions)

Description : Assist with spadefoot toad and blue-spotted salamander management and research. Conduct radio-telemetry, conduct night time road running surveys, take GPS locations, assist with biological processing of animals, record habitat and weather data including plant identifications.
Location : Franklin, CT
Salary : $10-$12/hr depending on experience
Qualification : Background in natural resource science is preferred. A valid driver's license is required. Preferred candidates will have experience conducting telemetry, using GPS meters, identifying Connecticut's amphibians and plants, entering and summarizing data (Excel and Access), have the ability to trek and navigate at night and during inclement weather while carrying bulky equipment, and to walk, stand, sit, bend, twist, reach, lift and carry up to 40 lbs.

Research Assistant: Avian Research and Monitoring
Location: Sessions Woods WMA in Burlington, CT
Dates of Employment: April 2009- October 2009
Job description: Assist with avian research and monitoring primarily for whip-poor-will and chimney swift. Responsibilities will include scouting research locations, collecting habitat measurements, night mist-netting, radio-telemetry, and conducting aural and visual bird surveys.
Qualifications: Background in natural resource science is preferred. Preferred candidates will have experience conducting telemetry, using GPS units, extracting birds from mist-nets, identifying Connecticut’s bird species both visually and aurally, collecting habitat measurements, entering and summarizing data (Excel and Access), and have the ability to trek and navigate at night while carrying bulky equipment.
Hours: 35 hours per week, frequent night work required.
Salary: $10-12 per hour depending on experience (no benefits)

Student Conservation Association Wildlife Internships
Preserve the environment and gain new skills and experience with federal resource agencies including the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey, as well as many state and local agencies and private organizations. Most SCA interns work directly with park or agency professionals in rewarding, meaningful, hands-on conservation positions.
