Earth Day at UConn

Each year, the University of Connecticut’s EcoHusky Student Group and Office of Environmental Policy host the Earth Day celebration on Fairfield Way in the Storrs campus.

The event was aimed at raising awareness about environmental sustainability initiatives on campus by highlighting ongoing efforts to reduce the University’s ecological footprint through such things as the research into the production of biodiesel fuel from waste cooking oil, enhanced recycling programs in dining halls and classroom buildings, energy and water conservation tips for students, and measures to expand the use of fuel-efficient and alternative vehicles, including bicycles, for campus transportation.

Click on each year below to see our highlighted annual events!

2007 Highlighted Activities

The 3rd Annual Mt. Sneaker, in conjunction with the Division of Athletics:
a display of sneakers collected throughout the semester from across campus for recycling. These recycled sneakers are used for synthetic tracks, playground surfaces, tennis courts, and field turfs.

In cooperation with Nike Reuse-a-shoe, the National Recycling Coalition, and our very own Willimantic Waste, we hope to make every year an even bigger success than the past.

The “green machine” fuel-efficient and alternative vehicle display
,
including a solar-powered cart, biodiesel bus, and a hybrid-electric vehicle. Ecohusky students also set up a biodiesel production and information display table for interested passerbys.

Recycling displays, posters and recently-unveiled containers

to educate the university community about the new campus recycling program. The new pilot program was initiated in Spring 2006.

Campus bicycle network
of trails, bike lanes and signage, plus sample bikes and tune-ups from local vendors.
The FREE bike tune-ups attracted a great deal of attention and support from bicyclists on campus, and we gained a great deal of comments and suggestions for the next steps to improve biking on campus.

Informational Displays and booths were also set up for Earth Day
,

including Maple Syrup making by the Forestry & Wildlife Club students, Free trade Coffee, Green Roofs, and Low-impact design projects.

The EcoHusky informational booth
also featured great giveaways and snacks for those interested in teh Student Organization's activities and initatives from the previous years. There were also highlighted displays educating student son the amount of water that could be saved by simply taking shorter showers or stopping leaky faucets in their dormitories each year.

2006 Highlighted Activities

The 2nd Annual Mt. Sneaker, in conjunction with the Division of Athletics:
a display of sneakers collected throughout the semester from across campus for recycling into various synthetic athletic and recreational surfaces. Students and faculty were also urged to contribute to this mound with their own sneakers -- an ideal solution to the dilemna with post-Oozeball shoes!

The “green machine” fuel-efficient and alternative vehicle display
,
including gas-electric hybrids, a biodiesel/grease car, and liquid natural gas vehicle.

The EcoHuskies also promoted a "Ride your Bike to Work Week" in anticipation of Earth Day. As part of the continuing campaign to encourage bicycling and alternative transportation, the week concluded with raffeling off prizes donated from Scott's Cyclery and Alternative Spoke to bicyclists.

Student designs for trails and natural landscaping
for a new 60-acre open space area that will be created north of the campus as a result of the UConn landfill remediation project. These displays, created by Landscape Architecture students, were up in the library for the entire months of March and April.

Low-impact development educational exhibits
featuring storm water rain gardens and green (vegetated) roofs. This green roof design, displayed by Soil and Water Conservation student group meembers, is similar to a design we hope to implement on campus in the coming year.

Do-it-yourself composting displays.

These displays, maintained by the UConn EcoHusky and Soil and Water Conservation student groups, were also supported during the UConn Co-op's Sustainable Living Book Fair: a three-day event that featured books, authors, lectures, and displays on all topics related to sustainable living ideas.

The EcoHusky informational booth
also featured great giveaways and snacks, at tables near the UConn 125th Founders Day picnic.

It was a day of environmental extravagence. The Annual Earth Day celebration at the University of Connecticut is a time for student groups and eco-enthusiasts to show off their activities, ideas, and events and the 2006 displays were no exception!
