If we could transform the waste we generate, with little more than the help of water, heat, and time, we could not only reduce the amount of waste left in landfills, but we could also produce something else that is valuable for our needs.
A Compost Technology Center will bring together experts from across departments and provides an environmentally friendly disposal alternative for waste items on campus. Initially, the Compost Technology Center will manage manure and leaf litter from the University main and depot campuses. In the future, the University hopes to expand its composting practices to include Dining, Agriculture, Landscaping, and Wastewater Treatment Facility wastes as well.
In addition to providing research and cost savings opportunities, the establishment of a compost center will generate valuable public relations as the University models innovative and proactive waste management practices.
Composting presents an opportunity to demonstrate UConn's commitment to sustainability, achieve considerable long term cost savings, and avert liability for fines and penalties stemming from violations of regulations.
