Climate Change:
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction

Understanding global climate is anything but simple. Trying to understand our impact on climate is also quite complicated. But with the overwhelming evidence reported during the Spring of 2007 by distinguished scientists serving on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we now know that it is "very likely" that human (anthropogenic) activity, especially emissions of CO2 from combusting coal, oil and natural gas for energy and transportation purposes, is contributing to dramatic changes in global climate. The IPCC further outlined catastrophic consequences that will begin to occur on a global scale within the next 50 years if we continue on our path toward increasing atmospheric concentrations greenhouse gases (GHG).

Here at UConn, we recognize our impact on the climate and appreciate the need for action. Using software provided by Clean Air - Cool Plant (CA-CP), UConn conducted a GHG inventory in 2005 and updated this inventory in 2007 to assess our greatest opportunities for GHG reductions. By implementing programs from biodiesel buses to CFL giveaways and dorm energy conservation contests, UConn is taking action to raise awareness, reduce energy usage and decrease our carbon footprint.
