Wilbur Cross is one of the University of Connecticut’s existing buildings that has made strides towards a more environmentally sustainable campus.
Wilbur Cross was renovated in 2001 through the technique of adaptive re-use. This type of renovation focuses on preserving the historic features of a building while bringing the rest of the structure and space up-to-date.
Environmental benefits include the reduction of demolition debris and the conservation of energy and materials that would have been used for new construction.
From the beautifully restored woodwork in the North and South Reading Rooms to the natural daylighting in the West Atrium, Wilbur Cross combines the best of old and new.
What was once the main library is now the administrative hub of UConn.
