In 2004, UConn replaced the poultry barn’s “bubble drinkers” with water-conserving “nipple drinkers.” |

The old system bubbled water continuously, such as when the birds weren’t thirsty. The new system works through rubber nipples attached to containers of water, where a droplet forms. A lightbulb illuminates the droplet, which attracts the chickens, which peck at the drinker until their thirst is slaked. |
This change, originating from poultry barn manager, John Wheeler, has saved the University 1 million gallons of water every year. Also, the switch from “bubble drinkers” to “nipple drinkers” cost less than $3,000. |
