Poultry Barn

In 2004, UConn replaced the poultry barn’s “bubble drinkers” with water-conserving “nipple drinkers.”

Old system :'-(

The old system bubbled water continuously, such as when the birds weren’t thirsty.

The new system works through rubber nipples attached to containers of water, where a droplet forms. A lightbulb illuminates the droplet, which attracts the chickens, which peck at the drinker until their thirst is slaked.

This change, originating from poultry barn manager, John Wheeler, has saved the University 1 million gallons of water every year.

Also, the switch from “bubble drinkers” to “nipple drinkers” cost less than $3,000.
