E-Waste Recycling

What can I recyle at UConn?

Where can I recycle e-waste at UConn?

Useful E-Waste Links and Information

E-Waste is a waste type consisting of damaged or discarded electornic devices or associated materials.  Various e-waste items can range from rechargeable batteries and ink cartridges, to larger scale items such as televisions, projectors, and printers.  These materials are especially hazardous and should not be disposed of with normal trash due to their high concentrations of toxic chemicals and heavy metals.

Quick Facts:

  • 133,000 PCs are discarded each day in the US
  • 130 million cell phones are retired each year
  • In 2005, 2.6 million tons of e-waste was generated in the US, of which only 12.6% was recycled.

*All statistics from "Facts and Figures on E-Waste Recycling" available at http://www.e-takeback.org/docs open/Toolkit_Legislators/tools/Facts and Figures on E Waste and Recycling.pdf

There are several laws governing the proper disposal of e-waste items all over the country.  Specifically in Connecticut, Governor Jody Rell signed a law in July 2007, mandating manufacturers to provide consumers with recycling options for their televisions, computers, and monitors.

Here at UConn, we believe in setting an example and raising the standard for the community.  Currently, the University of Connecticut recycles state purchased e-waste items through programs with its respective suppliers.  However, students, faculty and staff, are able to recycle all personal e-waste through programs available on campus through the Office of Environmental Policy.  Partnering with Think Recycle, each collection raises money for the Green Campus Fund, through a special rebate program, allowing students, faculty, and staff to help support furture green initiatives and continued progress here at UConn.  Please read on to see where and how you can recycle your e-waste today!
