EcoHusky 2005-2006 Activities
EcoHusky 5000 5K Road Race: April 2006
On Sunday morning April 9th the EcoHusky student group of the University of Connecticut hosted the first annual EcoHusky 5000, a 5K road race/1.5 mile walk around scenic Horsebarn Hill. The weather was beautiful and the race was a huge success! We had an unprecedented turn out for a first year race with more than 130 people participating. Runners as young as 14 and as old as 72 participated. We raised more than $1,300 to support EcoHusky’s on campus environmental initiatives. In addition, we collected 3 huge barrels of sneakers for the on-going sneaker recycling program.

Trail Marking Project: April 2005
In late April, members of the EcoHusky Student Group and members of the Soil & Water Conservation Society teamed up to build several markers for the trailheads of the Fenton tract of the UConn Forest, several of which have been implemented over the summer. (If you would like see one of the markers, there is an easily accessible one on Horsbarn Hill Rd. near the picnic table area.) Student teams have also been re-marking the trails within this tract (see photographs below.) The group hopes that their efforts will lead to a safer, more enjoyable experience for anyone wishing to take advantage of the UConn trail system.

Earth Day: April 22, 2005
On Friday, April 22nd, the EcoHusky Student Group at the University of Connecticut Storrs campus celebrated Earth Day by “pulling the plug” on traditional fossil-fuel based energy sources through a day of near-zero emissions events focused on raising awareness regarding clean energy options currently available to the University and CT consumers. The day's events included "Unplugged" (a concert and alternative energy display showcase ), the "Green Machine Showcase," and the Sneaker Recyling Expo, featuring Mt. Sneaker. For more information on these events visit the Earth Day homepage or the Sneaker Recyling Program homepage.

Campus Bicycle Plan Support Ride: April 14, 2005
On April 14th, approximately 60 cyclists from around the state gave up their lunch breaks to participate in a "Campus Bicycle Network Support Ride." The Support Ride, organized through a collaboration between the UConn Office of Environmental Policy, EcoHusky Student Group, and the UConn chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, hoped to demonstrate that:
- UConn needs a safe, convenient bicycle network for travel on campus and to local destinations.
- Additional bike lanes, signage, storage racks and other amenities would encourage more bicycle use on campus.
- Bicycling at UConn is a viable, healthy and clean transportation alternative that would reduce air emissions from use of cars and other vehicles.
- A campus bicycle plan should be part of UConn’s Master Plan for a more vibrant campus.

EcoHusky Mug Day: March 2, 2005
On March 2, 2005 anyone that purchased an EcoHusky Mug from the Bookworms Cafe in the University Library received a free fill-up, a second free refill coupon, and an EcoHusky carabineer. During the event, Bookworms staff wore EcoHusky t-shirts and encouraged patrons to purchase a reusable mug to help reduce waste paper from future coffee purchases. EcoHusky volunteers worked at a nearby informational table to share facts regarding the EcoHusky Mug and its role in waste paper reduction at the University, as well as to hand out double-sided copy stickers and EcoHusky pamphlets. The event goal of 100 mug sales was more than doubled! To learn more about this waste paper reduction project, visit the Waste Paper Reduction workgroup's homepage.
